My Biggest Issue with Technology Consulting: A Big Reason Why I Left Accenture

The nature of project-based work is unpredictable and sometimes out of your control based off of the many factors that put you in a powerless position. This video will go over my biggest issue with technology consulting and something you should be aware of as well as this can happen to anyone in any consulting firm or field.

I waited for a few months to film this video because I was angry, frustrated, and upset. You may even still hear some anger and frustration in this video because sometimes you’re put in a powerless position, but sometimes you need to take your career in your own hands.

Have you experienced this? What would you do in this situation if this were you?

Big vs. Boutique Consulting Firms

I’m always a fan of boutique firms and always didn’t understand why so many people cared about being in the MBB or Big 4 as the ONLY destination. Boutique firms provide so much value and is actually how I started out when I did my data analytics consulting internship at Analytic Partners in NYC.

There are pros and cons to both big and boutique firms, but frankly it also depends on what you want to do with your career. Large consulting firms are great if you still want to explore many different parts of consulting and industries, and boutique firms are great to get a lot of focused experience and skills in a particular industry, field, or region – like data analytics at Analytic Partners!

Next time ask yourself why do you want to pursue consulting or the field you’re interested, and it can help you make the decision!

Project Structure in Consulting

I always get asked what should you expect on a project, and honestly this changes across firms, type of consulting, and even client and scope!

I know, I know, it’s the all too famous “it depends,” but I broke it up to a structure I noticed in most firms either big or boutique. Project size also differs as well. Management and strategy consulting may have smaller teams and tech tends to have bigger teams. Sometimes engagement manager/delivery lead is the same person as the project manager to be even leaner!

One other big misconception is analysts just “analyze” and don’t truly do consulting. It really is just a title, but you would typically be a support consultant. You might need to warm up to the responsibilities and tasks first, but you’re still going to be doing the work consultants will be doing, though you may have fewer client facing situations.

How is your current team structure, whether it be consulting or not?

WATCH THIS BEFORE GETTING INTO ADVISORY | Advisory vs. Consulting

In my Live Q&A a few months back, someone asked the question on what is the difference between advisory and consulting. I thought at the time I answered it well, but what better way than to actually make a dedicated video on this? I remember I was just as confused when I was a college student getting into consulting.

This is usually a question most people ask when looking into the Big 4. They are usually used interchangeably, so sometimes they are one and the same, but OTHER times, they are COMPLETELY different. I give you all the details and juice after I sat down with my friend to ask her some questions about the advisory practice in Big 4.

Stick around to the end where I ask the question on Fishbowl where we get true anonymous and honest insider information from Big 4 consultants!
