Google NYC Office: Noogler Lessons Learned

I took @addisonjchen to the Google office! We’re finally allowed social guests in the NYC office! Took this photo at the rooftop terrace on 9th Ave’s 14th floor with sweeping views of NYC skyline and beautiful weather.

Lessons I learned so far:
⭐️ Embrace being new! Being an experienced hire this time around, I felt pressured to know a lot on the get go, but it’s okay to just start all over! Every company does things differently and take your time.
⭐️ Explore and learn as much as you can! The offices, the culture, the people, the work, the crossfunctional teams, the workshops and courses, everything!
⭐️ It really is what you make of it! If you are not proactive, there will be missed opportunities. Jump on it and ask what you can work on or try out or even shadow before being asked to!

If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.

One of my projects at work is finally going live after two years! It also happened to be my FIRST project despite having done four others while this was still ongoing. It was a long journey and we had many hurdles… SO MANY! But what held us all together – and sane – was teamwork.

Actually we had our milestone celebration yesterday and the client’s CFO mentioned this proverb. It stood out to me on how this applies in other relationships in our life too!

Put yourself out there!

I’m known as an extrovert to many people but I’m really an introvert. According to Myers Briggs, I’m even 90+% Introverted haha. Takes a lot of energy, but sometimes you need to push yourself! Social gatherings could intimidate you but if you focus on genuine relationships, it makes things so much easier. ❤️

“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” by Wayne Gretzky

Now before you say the quote is from The Office, it was originally from Wayne Gretzky. 😂

I’m not a hockey person at all, but this REALLY has been my life motto for a very long time. As someone risk averse, I really tried to pushed myself to do more and do better. I have never regretted it. Thanks Jake!

Fake it till you make it

I used to do DECA high school business competitions. My first time was in my high school sophomore year when I did a 30-paged business plan on a East meets West department store which was a one-stop shop in Asian food, groceries, furniture, clothing… literally everything.

When we go to States competition in Rochester, we had to make an investment pitch. This was my first time ever presenting, and it was THE WORST. I LITERALLY read off a piece of paper and made NO eye contact. I epically failed. I went home so disappointed in myself because I had no confidence in myself despite knowing everything that I had to say.

I tried it again the next year and the year after that. I learned from my mistakes, and I knew it was all a confidence issue, but in my senior year, I made the top 10! I was able to do it by faking it even if I’m not confident.

Of course it doesn’t stop there. I went to college and when you major in business, you have to make presentations. My junior year in Core, AGAIN another program dedicated to a business plan on a new idea and an investment pitch, I had the confidence that shocked myself. Time and time again, I surprise myself and eventually, I was able to talk confidently and with poise. Now I KILL my job interviews, got my Accenture job, and now do YouTube videos where I put myself out there.

This was definitely a journey, but my confidence in myself, in my voice, and in my ideas have grown and now I am not afraid to be myself in front of anyone else. It took a while, but faking it till I made it definitely helped me get to this point, and I’m so glad I pushed myself! When have you pushed yourself for the better?

I also have a YouTube channel focusing on professional development, personal development, and a career & lifestyle in technology consulting!
