HOW to STAND OUT in your VIRTUAL or REMOTE Internship in 2020 | Get that RETURN OFFER!

Due to COVID19, many students are struggling to get internships and you may still be trying to find one! Don’t give up! For those that have found internships, they are most likely virtual or remote where you’re plugging away at home and not getting the true internship experience. For some, the main goal of the internship is to get that return offer, and it’s definitely whole a different ball game on exactly how to stand out and show that you’re worthy of one.

In my video today, I give you all my tips on how to succeed on getting your return offer VIRTUAL OR NOT, so if your internship is in person, you can still benefit from this video. Majority of these will be catered towards virtual or remote internships, but the exact same applies for if you’re in person.

I’ve had seven internships from high school through college, and I learned a lot by making mistakes and moving forward, so these were tips I picked up over time that helped curate a successful and valuable internship experience. I also learned how to get the most out of my internships as well to progress my career, whether or not it’s relating to my ideal career path! I go over in this video how you can get the most worth out of your internship today or in the future!

If you have any further questions about any of these tips, please let me know! In addition, my channel caters mostly to college students and young adults in their 20s that focus on the technology consulting career, professional and personal development, and money, so if you’re interested in this, please consider subscribing!

10 Tips on how I ACTUALLY Saved Money in NYC!

I released a video last week on my debt-free journey, and as promised, here are the tips I have on how to save money! New York City is notorious for being super expensive, but it is still possible to save a lot of money! I tell you all the tips I used to ACTUALLY save enough money to pay off $50,000 of student loans in one year!

Despite the title, I broke this video up into two parts. The first half is focused on general tips ANYONE can use. The second half is focused on not-so-obvious tips New Yorkers can use while living in this expensive city! I’ve even given these tips to my friends born and raised in NYC and they weren’t even aware of half of these tips you can save even more money.

I wanted to note that I think the BIGGEST reasons why many can’t meet their financial goals are really denial, lifestyle creep, and discipline. Just because you live in NYC or an expensive city like LA or SF doesn’t mean you can’t save. In fact, I’ve compared my budget to someone down south and I actually spend less than him. Due to COVID19, almost everyone is trying to spend less (and even saving their stimulus package when you should be “stimulating” the economy) and some are even missing bills. The first step on meeting your financial goals with a fool-proof plan no matter how bad it gets is really acknowledging where you’re at and what you need to do to meet them, being aware of lifestyle creep, and lastly, DISCIPLINE to stick to the plan. In my video, I’m not trying to teach how to live like a barbarian, but there are SO many tips anyone can use to still live a good life and save your money so it’s sustainable.

My channel typically focuses on professional development but I also highlight my experience, lifestyle, and insights into a career in technology consulting in hopes to encourage more women to consider this amazing career – especially in STEM! In 2019, student loans reached an all-time high of $1.41 trillion! That is RIDICULOUS! I want to tell you that you can do it and that it IS possible as you can see with my debt-free journey. This is also a difficult time for many financially due to COVID19, so I wanted to assure you that you can do this, and when there is a will, there is a way.

I attended Boston University, and while I had grants, it wasn’t enough, so I had to take $50,000 in student loans. I was super determined to pay it off because I hated the feeling of being in debt. Today, I’m releasing a video on my debt-free journey in how I paid off ALL $50K in about one year while living in New York City and hopefully this can inspire you to get started on your journey today!

My channel typically focuses on professional development but I also highlight my experience, lifestyle, and insights into a career in technology consulting in hopes to encourage more women to consider this amazing career – especially in STEM! Fake it till you make it

I used to do DECA high school business competitions. My first time was in my high school sophomore year when I did a 30-paged business plan on a East meets West department store which was a one-stop shop in Asian food, groceries, furniture, clothing… literally everything.

When we go to States competition in Rochester, we had to make an investment pitch. This was my first time ever presenting, and it was THE WORST. I LITERALLY read off a piece of paper and made NO eye contact. I epically failed. I went home so disappointed in myself because I had no confidence in myself despite knowing everything that I had to say.

I tried it again the next year and the year after that. I learned from my mistakes, and I knew it was all a confidence issue, but in my senior year, I made the top 10! I was able to do it by faking it even if I’m not confident.

Of course it doesn’t stop there. I went to college and when you major in business, you have to make presentations. My junior year in Core, AGAIN another program dedicated to a business plan on a new idea and an investment pitch, I had the confidence that shocked myself. Time and time again, I surprise myself and eventually, I was able to talk confidently and with poise. Now I KILL my job interviews, got my Accenture job, and now do YouTube videos where I put myself out there.

This was definitely a journey, but my confidence in myself, in my voice, and in my ideas have grown and now I am not afraid to be myself in front of anyone else. It took a while, but faking it till I made it definitely helped me get to this point, and I’m so glad I pushed myself! When have you pushed yourself for the better?

“I’m going to kick some ass and remind them that I’m fierce.”

Jessica Pearson is QUEEN! If you guys haven’t seen her in Suits or Pearson, you have to watch the show. In the show, Jessica is a badass, head-turning, top-notch Black BOSS in a law firm. Let her be a role model for you all.

A lot have been wondering how to stand out in their internships or what they can do in their now virtual internships. My suggestion is to reach out for a coffee chat or a lunch break call and really get your name out there. It may be difficult at first, but trust me: you’re FIERCE and you just need to believe in it.

When I was the only female intern at my time in Analytic Partners, I didn’t let that stop me. I proceeded to meet up with over 20 employees for coffee chats and lunch breaks to learn about them, the company, and their jobs. I built my spheres of influence. I even got to have a coffee chat with the CEO!

I also didn’t stop there and started Women Wednesdays. Since it was a data analytics consulting firm, it was hard to find women. It was maybe close to 25% of the firm. So I started Women Wednesdays which was a dedicated lunch every other Wednesday open to the women in the firm. Even the Chief People Officer, though male, took note of how it was as a woman in the firm in hopes to make a better experience for the company!

So let’s remind you I was 20 at the time. You don’t need to be 40 and high up in the ranks to start something like this: all it takes is guts to kick ass. You can do this! Make a name for yourself. The worst you get is a no, the best you get is a return offer from your internship for a full time job!

Every Friday, I will be posting a storytime with a lesson or tip. Follow me if you would like more! I also have a YouTube channel focusing on professional development, personal development, and a career & lifestyle in technology consulting!

How to TAILOR your RESUME to any COMPANY and JOB LISTING!

The poverty rate in the US is 22% for the Black population (among the highest), so they can’t access the resources and knowledge the privileged can through paid courses or even higher education. I make this information accessible through YouTube on how to improve your chances on getting a better job through tailoring your resume to companies and jobs – a skill most people don’t have! As many are laid off or furloughed due to Covid-19, this resource is great to help you get back up on your feet.

Too many people don’t realize sending the same resume out isn’t effective at all. You’re actually supposed to tailor your resume to each job and company you apply to. If you’re wondering why you didn’t get a call for an interview, this could be the reason why. I know this is a tough time when it comes to job and internship search especially with Covid19, so I filmed this video on how I tailored my resume to land a technology consulting job at Accenture as my first entry level job out of college! Also, to keep it interesting, I created a mock resume of my cat, so that may get you to laugh a little. 😊

My channel focuses on professional development but I also highlight my experience, lifestyle, and insights into a career in technology consulting in hopes to encourage more women to consider this amazing career – especially in STEM! I do have videos on how exactly I got my job at Accenture, so look out for that!
